GreenUp-Project since May 2022

Davos GreenShare

With the residents of Davos, we share objects/resources from the WEF Annual Meeting and throughout the entire year from Kelly Transports and privates.

This way, we avoid waste and conserve valuable resources. Only during the WEF-week over the past years over 8000 items were saved, and are being reused locally by around a 1000 local families and organisations. With that we avoided CO2 greenhouse gasses! The equivalent of 37’000kg.

Since December 2021 

Green-to-Green

The first private organic waste collection project of its kind in Davos. In this project is organic waste is separated, collected and then used to produce biogas and ultimately to generate electricity.

The project run a succesful pilot from December 2021-2023 with the Biogas Plant Davos and Guyan+Co AG Davos with currently 90 households. Now we are ready to scale up the project. 

Clothing Loop

The pilot

In December 2021 we started the pilot with Guyan and Co. in the Bunda-quartier. The project was discussed at the General Assembly and a suitable location was found to place containers. GreenUp created information flyers as well as posters and instructions for all households. 

It took about a year for the trash to only contain the items that are allowed, and not other items such as plastic bags or wood. 

The good thing of a Biogas-plant is that one can even process cooked food, plus more types of food-remains. Whereas with a compost-solution it is more restricted, but one creates super-healthy soil (if done well) which is what our soils much need. 

The project continues to run and once per year we make up the balance and see what points for improvement there are. 

About this Project 

Organic waste is a resource and does not belong in a waste bin. This is what motivates us from the non-profit GreenUp to encourage people to use their waste into compost, or for larger groups, to turn it into energy.

A succesful pilot with the Biogas Plant can now be scaled-up and we are very happy to welcome a selected number of new partners in 2 phases:

PHASE 1: Until mid-2024 extend the pilot as to comprise 3-4 partners, including one private property.
PHASE 2: From mid-2024 onward open up to more partners in Davos.

 

The partnership

Participating households have the opportunity to deposit their organic waste in a dedicated container located in an enclosed space. The container is regularly taken by Toni from the Duchli Ranch to the Biogas plant for emptying, when needed, and then returned empty.

Requirements

  • A contactperson for Toni, who is responsible for keeping an overview of the process, call Toni when a container is full. This could be a facility manager or another person.
  • A location which can be closed off and fits 1,  ideally 2 containers
  • A signed partnership with GreenUp
  • Ensure all households actively sign-up for the project and understand the guidelines.
  • GreenUp provides all necessary tools and information.

GreenUp Partnership

  • We propose a partnership with a starter contribution and then an annual fee for keeping the project alive.
  • Take-In and creating setup
    Inform and support households about proper use
  • Pick up whenever needed, on average 2-4x a month
  • Information website for participants 

The exact costs we are still figuring out, we are happy to discuss those at a first meetup.

Useful information 

  • Each household should have their own small  small container biological waste in their household. This small containers are not provided. 
  • Two big containers that provided from us should be filled one after other. Not both in once.
  • If one container is full, the authorized person always calls the day before to take it away.

  • Can people put their biodegradable plastic bags in the container? yes
    • Are household-containers provided? No, for inspiration however, see here 

    • Can I be part of the project if I am from a private household? We will do a first pilot now with a complex of more private households. We plan to scale up the options over the coming years. 

    From Green Waste to Green Energy: the process

    The system is capable of producing a maximum of 800,000 kWh of OEKO electricity per year at full operation. This capacity can supply energy to up to 150 households. Biogas stands out among renewable energies due to its versatility. It can be easily, cleanly, and decentralizedly produced from organic waste and integrated into supply networks in the form of electricity, heat, or, after appropriate processing, biomethane. This flexibility allows biogas to be used as an energy source adaptable to both space and time.

    Organic substrates are stored in a silo and a receiving pit. From there, the mixture is transported or pumped to a fermenter, where it undergoes fermentation with constant stirring. During this process, biogas is produced and collected under the flexible tent roofs of the biogas station. Subsequently, the gas drives an on-site decentralized generator, where it is converted into electricity and heat. Alternatively, biogas can be decarbonized in a processing plant and injected into the natural gas network as biomethane.

    Swap Ticino!

    Since 2022 GreenUp has been experimenting with the idea of building Clothing Loops as an answer to Fast Fashion: rings of people in a city or neighbourhood constantly exchanging clothes. In the Ticino region we started in 2023 with public exchanges and in 2024 we launched ‘Swap Ticino’: a series of action-oriented events in various cities to promote slow fashion, a fun and educational way to start taking action against fast fashion.

    Clothing Loop

    Swap Ticino: Together with Fashion Revolution Switzerland Ticino, in 2025 we plan to run 5 events in 5 cities, create beautiful awareness campaigns with know-how and tips, educational videos and make sure that at the end of the year over 200 people are continuously exchanging clothes by creating ‘clothing loops’.

    By taking clothes out of our wardrobes and sharing them with others, we not only build community, we save millions of litres of water, thousands of kilograms of CO2 and give people with less economic possibilities the chance to get good clothes for free.

    The why

    The fashion industry causes 10% of man-made CO² emissions and is the second largest consumer of water in the world. Reusing clothes is currently by far the most sustainable way to counteract this. Innovations in fabrics and sustainable brands are playing an increasing role, but reuse is by far the most ecological still at the moment.

    “The Clothing Loop” was launched in the Netherlands under the name “Ketting Kledingruil ” during the first COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 and became a great success. Currently, more than 400 loops are operating nationwide. Now they want to conquer the world, and we are doing that with them.

    Starting a Loop!

    In the beginning we need many Loop starters, so that other people in your neighborhood or town can sign up!

    What?
    Get minimal 15 people together that live relatively near, create the backbone with the Clothing Loop app or WhatsApp/Telegram and start a Loop.

    How?
    1: Sign up through the form (see button)
    2: We’ll send you the Toolkit and once you’re ready add your town or neighborhood to the form
    3: Find people and set up your Loop
    4: Happy Looping!
    5: Support the Loop, add new people from time to time

    Time involvement
    A couple of hours per week max. Usually we add new people to the route every 2-weeks.

    All the time from us, plus we set up a special FB-group so you can start to help each other.

    As soon as a new Loop is active we will add it to the national form and you can sign up.  If there is no Loop in your neighbourhood or town, we invite you to become a Loop-Starter!

    GoSimple

    Over the course of several months, households take up the challenge of living more simple and sustainable in a fun, positive way. By taking part in workshops in the areas of food, minimal waste, stress reduction, mobility and local consumption, the households learn how they can make their lives more resource-efficient all round. At the same time, they have the opportunity to exchange ideas with other participants and experts.

    From 2024 we will be able to offer the programme across Switzerland to cities, cantons, companies, organisations, schools, housing cooperatives and associations and organise a “GoSimple” Programme for their target groups! 

    The goal of GoSimple is to strengthen one’s own satisfaction with a simpler life and at the same time to protect the world of tomorrow in a sustainable way.

    What is GoSimple?

    Over several months, Basel households participate in a guided group program and take on the challenge of living more simple and sustainable. Through workshops in zero waste, mobility, housing and energy, local economy, and food, they simplify their lifestyles. Participants support each other in this process.
    A pilot project with 16 households in 2022 is now being followed by a program with a larger group of participating households in 2023 in the city of Basel.

    Starting in 2024, the GoSimpe program will be available nationwide for cities, companies and other organisations to implement together with GreenUp. 

    Impact

    People experience benefits of a happy frugal lifestyle: 

    • They discover the benefits (stress reduction, increase in time and financial resources, strengthening of community networks).

    • They change their habits, and adopt a more simple, climate-friendly lifestyle

    • Participants become role models in their social context and inspire the households around them

    The city of Basel makes a significant contribution to the future of sustainable social lifestyles

    • Basel is a role model for other cities, as the project originated and is made possible here.

    • People in neighbourhoods and districts are better connected: new connections are created through regular exchanges between households during the project. Neighbourhood centres are included in the project as workshop locations in order to form more intensive networking.

    • Basel can adapt infrastructure to facilitate people in the city even more to live a happy frugal lifestyles, based on the learnings of the project

    Inspiration and concrete nudges for the rest of Switzerland 

    • A household-programme has been created that other cities, companies and any association, school or other organisation can implement for their people..

    • The project is accompanied by media partnerships, bloggers and vloggers to inspire people across the country.

    GreenShare – preloved items
    Together with many of you, we managed to save around 15’000 kgs of CO2 by keeping resources after the events in the WEF-week in a Loop! We are now working to extend the project throughout the year. More news to follow! Anything left you can find in the GreenHub.

    Aromatherapy Workshop 

    Until end of March 2024, every tuesday evening from 18.00 – 19.30 there is an Aromatherapy Workshop in the GreenHub organised as part of the guest programme. Local people can also participate, by directly going to the DDO-counter Monday afternoon or Tuesday and reserve a spot.

    Bio-Waste for households – “Green-to-Green”
    Davos doesn’t have centralized options for organic waste. The best use of our organic waste is turning it into compost for healthy soils. We at the GreenHub are promoting this practice in various ways. This is however not a solution for everyone and an additional option is to turn waste into energy. December 2021 we started a pilot with the Biogas-Facility Duchli and are now scaling that up. 

    Promenade Garden
    Even at 1600m is it possible to grow yummy vegetables on healthy organic soil. Our pilot project Promenaden-Garden was a huge success and we are looking at the best ways to scale it from 2024.

    The “DuraPass” is a booklet with discounts and offers on more than 78 sustainable services, offers or products in the Canton of Neuchâtel. The offers cover all aspects of sustainability, from wellbeing to food, from slow mobility to slow tourism. The DuraPass is a great way for people to get to know “sustainable Neuchatel” and a boost for regional sustainable development. You can purchase it here online.

    Promoting a regional sustainable economy

    In the canton of Neuchâtel, there are many good local sustainability initiatives and offers that enrich the canton and its inhabitants, but not all of them are known to the general population. It is therefore sometimes difficult for these initiatives to flourish or even survive, especially in uncertain times like these.

    The creation of DuraPass not only addresses these issues, but also encourages people to support and stimulate their local economy, while raising awareness of more sustainable ways of living.

    Concrete win-win partnerships will be set up with 30 sustainability actors throughout the canton. By giving them the opportunity to stand out and be visible to the general public with special offers, we allow a diversification of offers and a response to the new demands of the population in terms of ecological responsibility.     Tavolata Felice

    During the Advent season our Tavolata Felice campaign with online chef-videos showed ten thousands people all over Switzerland how suprising vegan food can be, and inspired them with recipes and tips to leave out meat more often.

    A campaign online and offline

    To inspire people to eat less meat at Christmass we produced videos with many chefs who filmed simple yummy dishes; which we promoted through an online campaign. Plus 3 online events; 1 for each language. 

    During the COVID-lockdown we hang up 38 interactive Garlands in cities across Switzerland, with tips, recipes, infographs, which then connected back to the website and online campaign.

    Sommer 2020

    Slow Safaris

    20 exciting treasure hunts in and around Swiss cities allowed thousands of people to explore special, unexpected places with their own muscles: on roller skates, by foot or by bicycle. Good for body, mind, soul and planet!

    Exciting treasure hunts

    What could be better than to get from one place to another by bicycle or even on foot on a sunny day. We created 20 slow safaris throughout Switzerland during the “Corona summer” of 2020.

    A Slow Safari is a route that leads from any chosen start-location to a beautiful or unexpected spot. There a “treasure-box” awaits. It is to be reached by CO2-friendly – slow – means of transport. 

    In order to make this possible, we carried out a Crowdfunding Campaign and managed to raise 10’000 CHF. 

    Impact

    Not only did more than 500 people go on a treasure hunt, hundreds of thousands of people were inspired around slow mobility due to articles in large media outlets.

    We also organized fun street-events in 6 cities that resulted in map with people’s secret “slow” mobility tips.
